About the Show

Jane Austen is celebrated for her witty and insightful portrayals of early 19th-century British society. Her works, including Pride and Prejudice, offer sharp social commentary on themes like marriage, class, and morality, often through the lens of strong female protagonists. Austen wrote during a time when women's voices in literature were rare, publishing anonymously to navigate societal expectations. Pride and Prejudice was originally drafted as First Impressions around 1796-1797 and was revised and published in 1813 under the new title. It quickly gained popularity for its engaging narrative about the Bennet sisters and their romantic entanglements, becoming one of the most beloved novels in English literature with countless reprints and translations over the centuries.

Set in the Regency Era (1811-1820), a period marked by elegance, social rigidity, and the influence of the Napoleonic Wars, Pride and Prejudice captures the intricacies of genteel life in rural England. This era, named for the regency of George IV, emphasized manners, propriety, and advantageous marriages amid economic uncertainties for the middle class. Austen's story explores the titular flaws of pride and prejudice through characters like the intelligent Elizabeth Bennet and the aloof Mr. Darcy, highlighting how misconceptions and societal pressures shape relationships. The Regency setting, with its balls, estates, and strict etiquette, provides a vibrant backdrop that contrasts personal growth with rigid class structures.

Over the years, Pride and Prejudice has endured through numerous adaptations, evolving with cultural shifts while retaining its core charm. From early stage versions in the 19th century to iconic film and television renditions—like the 1940 Hollywood movie, the 1995 BBC miniseries starring Colin Firth, and the 2005 film featuring Keira Knightley—the story has been reimagined in various formats, including modern retellings such as Bridget Jones's Diary and zombie-themed parodies. These interpretations have introduced Austen's wit to new generations, emphasizing timeless themes of love, self-awareness, and social critique in diverse mediums like books, operas, and web series.

This particular adaptation by Melissa Leilani Larson brings a fresh, theatrical vibrancy to Austen's classic, faithfully capturing its humor and character depth in a script that's been praised for being sharp, funny, and clear. First commissioned by Brigham Young University to celebrate the book's 200th anniversary, Larson's version has seen successful runs at venues like Hale Center Theater Orem in 2023 and other community theaters, including audio formats and one-act editions for broader accessibility. At Karl G. Maeser Preparatory Academy, this production highlights the talents of our student actors and crew who have immersed themselves in the Regency world to deliver a heartfelt and entertaining performance.
